New Logo for the All Gen Gamers Podcast

All Gen Gamers is a weekly video game related podcast made by four awesome YouTubers:

I follow their individual YouTube channels as well as their podcast. It’s one of my favorites. I tried to be invited as a guest with my listener appreciation month video entry.

The call to action

In their episode number 76 and 77 they asked their listeners to suggest a new logo for their website as they thought the old one needed a facelift. Because I love designing, and I’m a fan of the show, I wanted to offer my help.

The idea

A podcast for people and video games of all generations.

That is the podcast’s official slogan. I wanted to respresent the marriage of classic and modern gaming in an elegant way, so I thought of a classic NES controller with the Playstation’s D-pad. It’s really subtle, but it could be substituted for an analog stick for greater effect. For the lettering I couldn’t use anything but a pixel style font.

Steps of making the logo

1. I started in Adobe Illustrator. I chose the appropriate font and set the size, leading, and tracking to my liking.

2. I converted the text into outlines and applied an offset path to get the white border around the letters.

3. I imported it into Adobe Flash and applied some gradients, highlights, and shadows to give it volume.

4. Also in Adobe Flash, I drew and colored the  controller and the star between the letters.

5. I imported the resulting vector image into Illustrator again and applied some arching effects to the letters and controller.

6. I applied a drop shadow to all the elements, a gradient background, and the podcast’s slogan.

7. I found a vector image of the iPhone and added it to the image. I always listen to the podcast on my phone, so this was a little fun thing for me.

8. I exported the final image in .png format (300 ppi) and imported it into Adobe Photoshop for the final resizing and saving the file for the web.

Final thoughts

I usually work in black and white first, so the logo is lacking color and the controller can still use some work. I submitted this image to the podcast’s forum and offered my help to update their website. Other listeners are submitting their ideas as well, so let’s just see if they decide to use mine. Either way, I just wanted to give something back to a podcast that gives me so many hours of free entertainment.
